About Tom Meehan + mission
Born and raised in Hallowell, Maine --> Crafting fine leather goods in Austin, Texas. Somewhere in between, a penchant for creating with purpose and an eye towards finding the beauty in all things, took hold. This isn't surprising as Maine is objectively beautiful and home to some of the most wildly creative people you'll ever meet. These things have a tendency to rub off on you if you aren't careful. I took these sensibilities to cattle country, where a person can get lost in the imagery of cowboys, boots, Stetsons, saddles, et al... things that conjure the phrase: They don't make 'em like they used to.
There's something almost romantic about finding an old leather bag with all its markings and blemishes, covered in a wonderfully aged patina. It has a story that's as much visual as it is tactile. It's also ready to continue it's story if you have the mind to dust it off and put it to work. So why do the leather goods I buy now start falling apart in short order?
Because It's easy to find cheap leather goods. It's hard to find leather goods with transparency regarding how they're made and what they're actually made with. It's harder still to find leather goods with transparency made by a craftsman who cares about every aspect of the process to ensure that what you spend your money on was built to last.
That's why every one of my pieces are:
- Hand cut so I'm not bound by prefabricated die casts and can tailor your item to your needs.
- Hand stitched so you are ensured the strongest possible seams to hold your item together for a very long time. Machines simply can't produce a stitch as strong and reliable as a time-tested saddle stitch.
- Hand finished (edges) because while unfinished edges may be trendy, they are just that: unfinished. You likely wouldn't live in an unfinished house or drive an unfinished car (if you do you know the risks). Finished edges will significantly increase the longevity of your item.
In addition, all my pieces feature:
- 100% real, quality leather - While I am here to sell you leather goods, I'm not interested in doing so with lazy marketing buzz words. The hides I use are from various tanneries around the world; from here in the US, to Italy, to the UK and more. They are the best I have found at striking the perfect balance between durability and beauty.
- 100% Solid metal hardware - My hardware is almost exclusively solid brass. Because brass is durable, malleable, and resistant to corrosion. Natural brass also develops a beautiful patina over time making it the perfect compliment to any heirloom leather piece. Most importantly, I trust it. I also trust steel and copper where applicable, so I use them too.
Because while they might not make 'em like they used to... I reckon I can.
